Who we are

Public Letters is a practice focused on type design and typographic research. Founded by Finnish type designer, Eino Korkala, and South African type designer, Daniel Coull. Our partnership brings together perspectives from Finland and South Africa — two multilingual countries with very different experiences of access, information, and design. Through our shared practice, we aim to highlight typography as a living element of culture.

We met during an MA in Type and Media at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where Daniel was the first African designer accepted into the program. Recently, we collaborated on a lengthy research project of digital inclusion for African languages, emphasizing the urgent need for typographic support and broader language accessibility in the digital age. The project was awarded a multi-year grant by the Kone Foundation, Helsinki. Previously, we created an open-source interactive typeface, Climate Crisis, visualizing the melting of polar ice caps, as part of a campaign for Helsingin Sanomat. The typeface, which won a D&AD Graphite award in 2021 for Type Design, was acquired by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum for their permanent collection in 2021, and displayed during an exhibition entitled Acquired!, 2024. It has been exhibited at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, 2022, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, 2024.

Public Letters is our platform for type projects that create cultural and social value rather than just selling fonts. We hope it can also be a space for other designers interested in socially conscious work — a place that encourages people to think of letters as shared cultural artifacts shaping both personal and national identity.

ALL-INCLUSIVE LICENSING

Pay once, valid forever, no subscriptions, almost no restrictions.

Here’s the deal, licensing is overly confusing. Especially in a world where things are more restrictive and we own less because of it. Public Letters aims to do it differently, we’d much rather you have more freedom to use type and share your voice.

Please read our licensing EULA for details. Any questions, please feel free to send us a mail or see the FAQ below.

This number is based on how many people total are in your organisation. This is a simplified method for calculating license pricing that we believe is fairer to all parties, cost scales according to company size and there are less restrictions in terms of use. Rather than the conventional method of knowing how many desktop users, web page views, app uses are going on. We prefer to give users more freedom.

Educational: We understand the struggle of the student hustle and wanting to take pride in your work. Students can enjoy a 70% discount for fonts used in academic work and self-initiated commercial projects.

Freelance or Personal: Suited for small working pairs, or for the lone wolf. If you are outsourced by a design agency, company, and or mom and pop shop, this one is for you. Comes with a slight discount, since you shouldn’t be expected to pay the same as a corporation.

Commercial: If you work at an agency, studio, or company that needs many users, installs, and sharing around the workplace.

  • You are not allowed to alter, modify, or reverse engineer the fonts in font software and export new files.
  • You can outline fonts in design apps and modify them for logos or custom lettering.
  • You may not use fonts to promote violent, discriminatory, or hateful content.
  • You must request permission before using fonts in political or religious contexts.
  • You cannot embed or host fonts publicly (e.g., public servers or repositories).
  • You may not use the fonts or styles to train AI models.

Yes.

No, never. No subscriptions here. Buy a font license once, use it forever.

Currently we support many Latin-based alphabets and languages; there is a viewable list at the bottom of each typeface showing the language coverage. Our aim is to support more African languages — we have a project discussing this research here. Beta fonts have limited language support at first, which will expand with each update until the final release.

These are work-in-progress fonts yet to be completed, sold as-is for now at a discounted price. We continue to develop and expand the typeface’s offerings until its final state.

Nope, send us a mail and we’ll give you a discount to upgrade the remaining fonts.

We’re type designers at the ready — send us a mail and we will do our best to help out.

This is possible. We’re happy to add characters or create a unique version for your project or organisation. Send us a mail to inquire.

We recognize that not every project and scenario is exactly the same. If you need help in this regard, reach out to us and we’ll tailor an option specific to your needs.

With a purchase we’ll send OTF for desktop and WOFF2 for web. Variable fonts come as TTF. Upon request we can issue TTF for desktop as well if needed.

Sadly no — fonts are software, and we cannot guarantee if they have been used, shared, or deleted. However, if the font software is faulty or not working as expected due to technical issues, please contact us and we’ll fix the issue.
